LONDON: The US health and pharma watchdog, the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (PGB), has issued a statement demanding the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) take action against the drugstore chain, which is based in the United Kingdom, and to provide for its compliance with the MHRA’s ‘Eli Lilly and Company’ guidance on the prescription supply of medicines.
The statement, from the MHRA, was made by the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (PGB).
The statement from the MHRA, which was published by the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in a press release on its website, said:
“PGB’s statement is very important because it will inform and encourage consumers about the importance of ensuring their health is protected. The company is committed to ensuring that the supply of medicines is free of unnecessary risks.
“It is also important that the MHRA’s guidance remains up and running. It will be a clear message to all parties involved.”
The statement was based on a letter from the US health and pharma regulator to the MHRA, which states that the supply of medicines “is an essential part of our national and global healthcare system” and that the product should “not be used for purposes other than those listed in this guidance”.
PGB also issued a similar letter to the MHRA from the US and the UK, which stated:
“PGB has made clear that its products are not intended for use in children under the age of 18, unless advised to do so by a health professional. We are committed to ensuring that this information is accurate and up to date.
“PGB has also made clear that it is unable to take the decision to supply medicines to people under 18 years of age in an environment where this is clearly indicated.”
PGB has also issued a statement to the MHRA stating it is “committed to ensuring that the supply of medicines to consumers is free of unnecessary risks” and that the product should not be used for purposes other than those listed in the guidance.
PGB is currently committed to ensuring its products meet the highest standards of safety and efficacy.
PGB says its products have undergone testing and are well tolerated and safe. The products include Viagra, Levitra, Cialis, Staxyn, Stendra and Stendra Professional, among others.
In a press release from the company, Pfizer confirmed that there has been a “significant decline in sales of some of its branded medicines in the UK over the past few years.”
PGB said:
“Since its launch in September 1998, the company has maintained a number of significant growth opportunities and has now launched more than 30 new medicines, including several for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED).”
PGB is committed to meeting the highest standards of safety and efficacy, which include the highest levels of safety and efficacy in clinical trials, as well as the highest levels of patient compliance with the guidance.
The company said:
“PGB believes that its products and services provide a reliable and efficient way to address the rising demand for affordable and accessible medicines, particularly for those without access to healthcare facilities or specialist advice.
“We look forward to working with Pfizer and other stakeholders to provide more accurate and up-to-date information to healthcare providers and patients to help them make decisions about their medicines.”
